Icon 83 (3.5" Floppy)

Now for a bit more useful drive icon, though not for long I suppose. I realized as I was doing this that I do not even own a 3.5" floppy drive on any of my 4 working computers. It seems that this drive format as well is not long for the world. Until then I suppose that more computers than not still have a 3.5 floppy drive.

This icon will be done with pretty much the same techniques as the 5 inch drive and in a similar style. So lets do it!

Step 1:

First we draw out the shapes of the drive, with several rectangles.
Step 2:

Now I temporarily fill the shapes and group them. Then I lean the disk back with the Perspective Tool.

Step 3a:

Now we add some details. By duplicating the shapes and offsetting them a bit, we make some bevels. Then using some rectangles we give the label some lines.

Step 4:

Now I change the color to a nice silver. Then I give disk back a brushed texture, using our Interactive Transparency Techniques.

Step 5:

I tweak the gradients on the slider and its background just to make it a bit nicer looking

Step 6:

Last we polish it off the icon with our
Shadow and Reflection Techniques.

We still have a few standard Drive types and we will finish them off in the next few days. Then we will make some more bonus drive types
