Icon 95 (PNG File)

Tonight we start off on the new default file types that are being added in IconPackager 3.0. I am going to start with the one that I use most; the PNG file. This is a file type that should be done with a bit more creativity, however I tend to like doing this icon in a similar style every time. I usually base it on the Windows XP PNG file. PNG files are more or less an RGB bitmap with an alpha mask to allow for transparency and compressed. For this reason I usually do 3 transparent objects, one red, one green, and one blue. So off we go.

Step 1:

First we will start by copying our JPG file and removing the graphics from the front of the page and we changing the Text Label to PNG.
Step 2:

Now we need our 3 shapes. We will use the three standards as we have used before.

Step 3:

Now using almost the exactly the same techniques that we use in our Gloss Tutorial I make our first shape: a green sphere.

Step 4:

Now just as above, we use the same Gloss Techniques to make our blue square. This is the same as the sphere, except we use two squares instead of two circles.

Step 5:

Once more, with two triangles, we use our same gloss techniques to do our Red Triangle.

Step 6:

Now, for polish, I copy the shadow from the triangle, and Crop it down to make the shadow look like it is falling on two different layers.

Step 7

I decided I want the shadows to be the colors of each shape. So I remake them. I also go through and convert the three shapes to bitmaps and give them a slight transparency.

Step 8

Last we give the new file a nice new reflection.

This should be a nice start to our IconPackager 3.0 file types. We will continue on thought the new default files over the next few weeks.

I will be missing the next few days since I am heading off in the morning to E3. I will be back in town on Friday, and hope to be back with the next Icon-A-Day on Saturday. See you then.

Nice idea using the index for linking.

Thanks for the icon, Paul.
