Musings on, Art, Skinning, Computers, and the True meaning of Life. (AKA The Lego Theory)
New limited edition version of Maya is available for free download, with almost all of the functionality still in it. The only difference between this version and the 7,500 dollar version is a ever-present Watermark, a Maya logo in the corner, and the inability to exchange the saved files with the full version. http://www.aliaswavefront.com/freemaya

If you want to learn the Top of the line 3D animation program it’s a great opportunity.

Another limitation is the plugin support - you can't use an external renderer like MentalRay to render. Also, the watermarks are even present in the viewports, and are rather large.

By the way, SoftImage also released a free version, meaning all the big apps (SoftImage|XSI, Maya & 3DS MAX) now have "demo" versions out.

actually the Free Maya version is NOT good for learning in fact its TOTAL AND UTTER GARBAGE.. do anything detailed and ur gonna have a MASSIVE headache trying to focus on urmodel trough the little holes in the GIGANTIC WATERMARK.. watermarking renderings.. limiting sizes.. no external plugin.. totally ok.. but the fucking viewport?.. Besides.. Mayas PLE might be used for learning.. I think the XSI Experience can NOT.. for 1 MAJOR reason.. even if Maya saves in a special format that only IT can read.. the XSI Experience can not SAVE AT ALL.. wich basically makes learning a HELL.. having to redo everything every time it crashes.. for such a big and complex program this is just no good..
